Homemade Colon Cleanse

Doing a homemade colon cleanse periodically is a great way to purge your body and colon of the accumulation of wastes.

This helps detoxify your body, specifically the colon.

You want to cleanse your colon of metallic residue, acidic wastes, stray fecal matter, and mucous-foreign bodies that have accumulated over time and are not expelled from the body.

This prevents them getting reabsorbed into our blood stream (very unhealthy!) or that foster an environment ripe for the development of bacteria, parasites, and viruses.

An unhealthy colon can also contribute to fatigue and exhaustion and lead to illness and disease. Some people also perform regular homemade colon cleanses to contribute to weight loss efforts.

There are a variety of ways to doing an effective homemade colon cleanse and usually you will combine a couple of them for the most effective results.

Change your diet for the duration of your colon cleanse

Eliminate red meat from your diet for a few days. During the period of time when you will be cleansing your colon, avoid all fats and fatty foods, as well. Instead, eat a light diet filled with lots of fruits and vegetables, especially those high in fiber like apples with the peelings or steamed broccoli. Enjoy salads or soups with lots of broth (not creamy soups). Eat fish rich in Omega-3 fatty acids. Drink plenty of water. And eat whole grains rich in fiber.

You can enhance the fiber content in your foods with specific fibers to make your homemade colon cleanse most effective. Try chopping, grating, or grinding psyllium seed husks and flax seeds and adding them to oatmeal. Flax seed is high in Omega-3 fatty acids-which helps prevent heart disease, breast cancer, and prostrate cancer-and it helps stabilize your blood sugar. Psyllium seed husks are often used to treat diverticulitis and constipation.

Lactic acid bacteria (also called probiotics) or acidophilus helps restore good bacteria in your body's system-which kills the bad bacteria and helps aid the body's digestion, as well as contributing to a colon cleansing process. Garlic, onions, and bananas all contain natural probiotics, so add them to your diet, as well.

Try a juice fast with your homemade colon cleanse

Rather than bulking up on foods, drink lots of fresh juices that are rich in pulp. These need to be homemade juices made from fresh fruits and vegetables. You can make your own healthy homemade juices for this purpose from celery, carrots, apples, and other fruits and vegetables with a juicer. Enzymes from the fresh fruits and vegetables assist in cleaning the colon. You will need to drink lots and lots of water while you are fasting to keep your body hydrated and help flush out your system.

Be sure to consult your physician before starting a fast-especially if you have a chronic condition or health concern such as diabetes, arthritis, high blood pressure, or any other disease or disorder.

Go on a soup diet

Switch to a steady diet of homemade soup for several days to a week at a time. Make your own healthy, homemade soups with broth, cabbage, onions, garlic, celery, carrots, beans, peas, corn and others. Even the vegetables that do not digest fully (like corn) help cleanse your colon because they scrape the sides of the colon as they are expelled.

Again, when attempting a homemade colon cleanse, drink lots of water during this timeframe.

Perform an enemea or colon irrigation procedure

You can do a simple enema at home with distilled water or luke warm coffee. Alternatively, you can do a colon irrigation using a home colonic board.

Take supplements to keep your body's systems in balance

While you are fasting or restricting your diet, your body still needs essential vitamins, minerals, and nutrients to stay healthy. Take a good multi vitamin, a vitamin C supplement, and a fish oil supplement rich in Omega-3 fatty acids.

Other alternatives

Ayurveda is a colon cleansing program developed as a result of ancient Indian medicinal remedies that advocates using three herbal detoxifiers: Haritaki, Bibhitaki, and Amalaki-to detoxify the colon naturally. A product you can purchase called Triphala contains these herbs in recommended quantities.

Other homemade colon cleanse remedies may include edible Bentonite clay, raw eggs, yeast flakes, aloe leaf, ginger, fennel, and even magnesium sulfate (commonly called Epsom salt). Before you start mixing up any of your own home remedies, however, you need to know what each ingredient does and the proper quantity to use so you don't inadvertently harm your body. Be sure to research any homemade colon cleanse recipes before using it or creating one of your own.

Finally, you may want to try a herbal fiber supplement as an alternative to fasting or other aggressive cleansing methods. Fiber makes a great, all natural colon cleanse; it bulks up in the colon helping to sweep out waste and toxins and promoting full body detoxification.
